Opening Keynote | Back to Our Senses: Storytelling in an Age of Technology
In a world increasingly mediated by technology, what if the future of storytelling is not about taking us further away from ourselves, but bringing us back to our senses? In this keynote, Professor Angela Chan explores how the next generation of storytelling is becoming more immersive, embodied and multisensory. From film and the written word to music, sound, live and audiovisual experiences, stories have always had the power to make us feel as well as think. Emerging creative technologies give us new possibilities to engage the body and the senses — and to create experiences that are richer, more inclusive and more deeply human.

Beyond the East-West Co-Production Myth: Why Great European Series Partnerships Don’t Happen by Accident
What if CEE is not a collection of small, separate markets — but a network of interconnected production ecosystems? And what new stories become possible when creators and producers tap into them?Building on the conversation at Karlovy Vary IFF, this discussion explores how East–West collaboration can move beyond cost advantages and production incentives to unlock something more valuable: creative partnerships, new talent and storytelling perspectives, financing opportunities and access to new audiences. Using real-life cases from the Baltics, Poland, Croatia, Czechia and other CEE countries, we will ask how the right local partner can open doors across borders, how producers and creators can find their way into ecosystems they don't yet know — and what Western partners need to bring to the table in return.Because the most interesting co-productions may not simply be about ‘where you can make a series’, but ‘who you can develop it with’ — and how bringing different creative perspectives together can unlock more ambitious storytelling.

Docuseries on the Rise: What Comes After True Crime?
Documentary series have gone mainstream. Once associated primarily with niche audiences and public broadcasters, they have become an important part of the streaming landscape, reaching audiences around the world. What is driving this boom, and what does it mean for the people making them? In an increasingly crowded market, finding a distinctive voice is just as crucial. True crime has become a cornerstone of streaming documentaries – but what comes next? New genres, formats and storytelling approaches are emerging, creating space for documentary series that are more experimental, stylized and able to connect with younger audiences.

Workshop | AI below the Line: How to Optimise Budget and Quality of Series Production
There is a large and growing appetite among classical series producers to incorporate AI into their work — and a corresponding gap in qualified guidance. Most do not yet have a working sense of what is technically possible, what is legally safe, or how AI actually changes a production plan in practice. Co-led by Milad Mesof — whose AI credits include House of David (Amazon) — the workshop would walk experienced producers through hybrid-production methodology (live acting combined with AI sets, stunts, and VFX), the current state of AI tools, the legal and rights landscape, and how to integrate AI into existing pipelines without compromising craft. The goal is practical: to give traditional series producers the qualifications and confidence to take their first serious hybrid project into production.

Stories at Risk: Consultation Findings for an Ongoing Debate
Over the past months, the “Stories at Risk - Cultural Diversity, Democracy and Debate on Screen”  initiative has examined the pressures shaping which European series get developed, financed, commissioned and ultimately reach the screen. Initiated by Seriesly Berlin with the support of the Council of Europe’s Culture on Screen Programme and a network of European industry partners, the project combined a Europe-wide consultation with a series of online Think Tanks bringing together different parts of the audiovisual ecosystem. Finally the findings come into the room. They point to growing pressure on creative decisions, limited space for risk-taking and structural barriers that often take effect long before a camera starts rolling. At the same time, they identify where change could begin – from development funding and editorial independence to greater trust in creators and audiences.

Seriesly Bar Talk with Dimitrij Schaad: Create Your Own Damn Story
Dimitrij Schaad doesn’t seem particularly interested in staying in his lane. Actor, writer, director – he moves between stage and screen, performing and creating, and increasingly puts his own stories at the center. With SERIESLY BERLIN opener JOSSI and the Netflix series CRAP HAPPENS (KACKEN AN DER HAVEL), Schaad is behind two very different projects that carry his creative signature. Where do his stories come from, how much does performing influence the way he writes, and what happens when an actor starts calling more of the shots? No career retrospective, no masterclass. This is about where Schaad is creatively right now – the ideas, risks and ambitions driving his work, what he wants to do differently, and where he wants to go next. Because when you can act, write and direct, the real question might be: what do you choose to do with all that freedom?

If You Know, You Know – Queerness Beyond the Plot
When does queer representation stop being “representation” and simply become life on screen? For a new generation of audiences, queerness can be a fact rather than a plot, something that needs neither explanation nor justification. But that freedom is far from universal. Across Europe, geography, politics and culture still determine which stories can be told, and how boldly they can be told. At a time when hard-won freedoms are once again being questioned, this conversation asks what normalisation really means, who gets to experience it and how storytellers can speak authentically to a generation growing up between progress and backlash.

Co-Producing Europe – And What’s Germany’s Next Move?
International co-production is becoming increasingly important for ambitious European series – while the frameworks supporting it are shifting. In Germany, federal incentive funding for film and high-end series has already been fully allocated for 2026, with fewer resources expected for 2027. This puts renewed focus on the future of the country’s funding framework and its role in international co-production. How can Germany maintain and strengthen its position as a reliable and competitive partner as financing models and industry needs evolve? As the European co-production landscape evolves, what is Germany’s next move? And how can national and European frameworks work together to strengthen international series collaboration?

Workshop | Production-Aware Writing: Crafting Ambitious Stories That Are Actually Financeable
What makes a series ambitious, distinctive, yet still producible? This practical workshop explores how writing decisions shape budget, production feasibility, financing and international co-production potential, without compromising creative vision. Through a diagnostic look at the common cost drivers (locations, cast size, VFX) we will examine how writers and producers can work together to find smarter ways to deliver the same dramatic impact. The session will consider techniques ranging from production incentives and choosing the right territory or co-production structure to selective use of action, off-screen storytelling, location reuse, etc. It will also address how to establish an appropriate budget range from the outset and protect the brand-defining elements audiences and commissioners expect.

Too Many Cooks? Turns Out, That’s the Recipe!
They say too many cooks spoil the broth. In European television right now, they're the only reason the broth gets made at all. No single broadcaster can essentially foot the bill for a high-end series anymore, so today's boldest stories are built by more partners, across more territories, than ever before. More voices in the room, more money on the table, and somehow still one story. Using “Under Salt Marsh” (a ZDF/Sky co-production) and “Summer of 1985” (a co-production between SVT and ZDF) as live proof, this panel gets candid about what it actually takes to pull that off: the trust, the trade-offs, and the shared vision that has to survive multiple broadcasters, cultures, and expectations. And then it looks forward. What's worth protecting in this model? What needs to change? And where will European co-production actually be five years from now?

The Art of the Possible:  Making Period Drama Work in Europe
“Grand Hotel by the Sea” is set to become the Netherlands’ most ambitious period drama, but its journey to the screen was anything but straightforward. Winters gives an exclusive first look at the series ahead of its Dutch launch in December and reflects on the unique strategy behind it, after spending seven years developing this project, ultimately building a dedicated studio to bring her vision to life. The conversation goes beyond the story itself to explore what it actually takes to make a major period piece work in Europe today. On the table are the creative risks involved, how European co-production made the budget feasible, and the smart distribution strategies that are bringing this local gem to international audiences. It’s a masterclass in balancing big-screen ambition with sustainable business sense.

Seriesly Bar Talk with „Beach Sisters“: The New Playbook for Sports Storytelling
Elite athletes are increasingly more than competitors: they are protagonists, creators and brands, building audiences that extend far beyond the sports they play. But what changes when their lives become the material for a series? As women’s sport gains visibility on screen, athlete-led series also present new opportunities for producers and broadcasters. Existing fan communities can give projects an audience before they even reach the market, while universal stories of ambition, rivalry and personal relationships can help them travel across borders. The question is whether the current momentum can turn into lasting investment – and open the door to new kinds of sports storytelling.

Own the Pipeline: Inside the Creator Ecosystems of German Giants
Production companies are moving closer to the creator economy – and that shift is changing their own structures. Major players are creating dedicated units to develop new formats, work with creators and connect content, audiences, distribution and monetization across platforms. But what does it take to build these new structures inside companies shaped by a very different production model? Audience data provides the backdrop: viewing habits are changing, platforms are multiplying and attention is increasingly fragmented. That means rethinking how to develop ideas, work with talent and build audiences, but also how IP, rights, distribution and monetization are considered from day one – increasingly with AI in the mix. The bigger shift may ultimately be in what a production company is built to do.

Seriesly Berlin Bar Talk with Jens Lapidus: From Courtroom to Screen: The Real-World Edge
Most crime writers research the criminal world from the outside. Jens Lapidus spent 15 years inside the Swedish justice system, working as a criminal defence lawyer while becoming one of the country’s most successful crime authors. But what happens when the reality you know becomes material for fiction? Lapidus draws on years spent in courtrooms and close to people involved in serious crime – experience that shapes everything from dialogue and character to power, loyalty and the mechanics of the justice system. It also comes with boundaries: what can you use, what should remain off limits, and how do you depict violence and criminal environments without turning them into spectacle? From courtroom experience to novels and serialized drama, Lapidus talks about transforming lived knowledge into fiction, what changes when a story moves from book to screen, and why sometimes knowing what really happens makes writing crime more complicated, not less.

“Entschuldigen Sie, mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut”
More and more German series are developed in English first – driven by streamer requirements and international financing. While this shift comes with its share of challenges, it also creates opportunities to strengthen a European mindset and rethink how we work across languages and markets. What does that mean in practice? How do you move through the translation process without losing your voice, and when is it actually worth switching languages? What changes once English becomes the default development language for a series that will ultimately be made in German? Drawing on his experience as Head Writer and Co-Creator of KRANK BERLIN, Samuel Jefferson gets into the realities of developing in a language that isn’t your own – from meeting the expectations of global platforms to preserving the specificity of a story across languages, and even using the friction between them to make unexpected creative choices.

From Creator to Company: The New Power Dynamics in Serialized Storytelling
Development, production, distribution, audience – these used to sit with different players. Creator-led companies are beginning to bring them under one roof, changing not only how serialized content gets made, but who owns it and who holds the leverage. As creators build companies and production structures of their own, the lines between talent, producer and distributor become harder to draw. Licensing, IP and ownership move to the center of the equation: what is worth giving up to scale, and what is worth keeping? And when creators already bring the audience, the brand and the creative idea to the table, who actually needs whom?

Video Podcasts New Journalism: Serial formats, distinctive voices and the direct-to-audience shift
Beauty, fitness, lifestyle - for a long time, that’s been the box female creators were expected to fit into. But what if the feed becomes a place for something else entirely?More and more female creators are experimenting with characters, recurring formats and stories that unfold over time - sometimes in 60 seconds, sometimes over dozens of episodes. They’re not waiting for a broadcaster or streamer to call. And they don’t necessarily need one.So what happens when creators move from posting content to creating series? What kinds of stories, formats and audiences can emerge - and could this be where the next generation of serialized entertainment begins?
