From Creator to Company: The New Power Dynamics in Serialized Storytelling
Development, production, distribution, audience – these used to sit with different players. Creator-led companies are beginning to bring them under one roof, changing not only how serialized content gets made, but who owns it and who holds the leverage. An existing audience can now be the starting point for developing a series rather than something to find after production. On YouTube and other digital platforms, creators can test ideas, build recurring formats and characters, and grow stories over time – while keeping a much more direct relationship with the people watching them. For producers, that turns the traditional logic of developing first and finding an audience later on its head. As creators build companies and production structures of their own, the lines between talent, producer and distributor become harder to draw. Licensing, IP and ownership move to the center of the equation: what is worth giving up to scale, and what is worth keeping? And when creators already bring the audience, the brand and the creative idea to the table, who actually needs whom?
